La Realidad Agredida

With Julieta Hernandez & Maria Mendes

Introduction:

The design for this project is rooted in the experience of being a Latin American woman within a context of systemic violence. It aims to convey a poignant narrative of memory and resilience through archetypal representations of Latin American architecture.

The architecture, laden with historical and cultural significance, becomes a canvas for the lived experiences of Latin American women. Through lighting, the design seeks to embody the phenomenological and physiological aspects of this narrative. Subtle plays of light and shadow accentuate the identity charged features, creating an atmosphere that resonates with the emotional and physical layers of memory.

Design Strategies

To harness the full potential of natural light, we strategically oriented the patio at a precise 28.5º angle to align with the sun's position during the summer solstice at noon. This deliberate shift optimizes sunlight penetration and influences the play of light throughout the day. Our façade incorporates a variety of window designs, ranging from rectangularly convex to concave. These diverse elements create a visually dynamic exterior, generating pockets of light and shadows that contribute to the building's architectural character. To amplify the benefits of natural light, we introduced distinct design features. The patio, a central passageway, a mini patio, and a lateral aisle were meticulously designed to extend from the floor to the sky, allowing an influx of daylight.

At night

And when the night comes, and the moon is out, your body frequency becomes a rhythm and a pattern, a flow that travels throughout the space, it is electricity, and it flickers. This frequency gives enough luminance to light these Latin American memories with a Latin American light within this American panorama. It is the burning incandescent bulb, the ever-traveling fluorescent, is the mix and match of color temperatures and temporalities, the switch from one to the other. It is just enough or maybe not bright enough, but it is the way it was, and the only way of honoring the past with a proper light.
